Ian Tyson

Sunday, October 1st, 7.00pm, $27adv / $29door
No Persons Under 21 Allowed

AT LITTLE FOX THEATRE

2209 Broadway, Redwood City, call 650-369-4119

Ian Tyson has long been one of Canada's most respected singer-songwriters. A pioneer who began his career in the early days of the first folk boom in the 60's, he was one of the first Canadians to break into the American popular music market. In the years that followed he hosted his own TV show, recorded some of the best albums ever made, quit the music business and became after years of backbreaking work a rodeo rider and a successful rancher. But with his songs covered by Neil Young, Judy Collins, Suzy Bogguss, Gordon Lightfoot, Bobby Bare and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, among many others, he returned to music with a vengeance in the mid-80s. He found himself able to combine his two separate lives in new songs that explained the reality of western culture and the mindset of a cowboy in a sometimes-alien world. Tyson's list of honours from the Order of Canada to platinum records, Juno Awards and Canadian Country Music Awards is too lengthy to repeat. He tours constantly across Canada and throughout the United States. www.iantyson.com

Druha Trava
Thursday, October 5th, 8.00pm, $10adv / $12door
under 21 accompanied by parent

AT DON QUIXOTES MUSIC HALL

6275 Highway 9 in Downtown Felton, call 831-603-2294

Druha Trava is a wonderfully individual band from the Czech Republic. They perform new acoustic world music with bluegrass influences. You might hear them perform a bluegrass tune, Bob Dylan tune or one by another American or British artist, or one of their many originals. Though they basically use a typical bluegrass complement of instruments, you might see the banjo player also pick up a clarinet or Irish whistle. This along with the versatility of the dobro player helps create much of their unique sound. Druha Trava means "Second Grass" in Czech. Speaking the universal language of music, this well-rehearsed group plays bluegrass and Americana with a Czech accent. Smokey lead singer Robert Krestan puts his soul into every word of covers like Dire Strait's Telegraph Road and Dylan's Another Cup of Coffee. Killer banjo by Lubos Malina and dobro by Lubos Novotny (recognized by American audiences who have seen them on previous US tours) are joined by new members Petr Sury and Emil Formanek. www.druhatrava.com

Peppino D'Agostino & Stef Burns

What a combo. How did the great Italian acoustic guitar instrumentalist Peppino D'Agostino hook up with Alice Cooper's legendary guitarist Stef Burns who is currently lead guitarist for Huey Lewis & The News. D'Agostino and Burns fast became friends in 2000 when a mutual friend introduced them. Burns came to see D'Agostino perform solo and immediately invited the acoustic guitarist to see one of his gigs with Huey Lewis & The News. The result is a much anticipated CD on Steve Vai's Favored Nations Label. Bayshore Road , the explosive duo recording from Peppino D'Agostino and Stef Burns, is certain to fascinate music lovers while featuring two of the most innovative and critically acclaimed guitarists working today. That just scratches the surface of a collection celebrating technical virtuosity and the melodic and rhythmic joys of the acoustic (D'Agostino) and electric (Burns) guitar. The two wrote and recorded the collection -- which features seven originals and three covers, including a snappy, ultra-percussive twist on Joe Zawinul's classic Birdland -- at the studio they share, located on Bayshore Road in a small town near San Pablo Bay just north of San Francisco. www.favorednations.com

Bruce Molsky
Old Time Fiddle, Banjo, Guitar and Vocals
Sunday, October 8th, 8.00pm, $15adv / $17door
AT THE CAYUGA VAULT

1100 Soquel Ave, Santa Cruz
call 831-475-4938 or email Brundle@attglobal.net

"Old-time music's answer to Ry Cooder" - Minneapolis Star-Tribune

"…making the old sound new…effortlessly" - All Music Guide

Bruce Molsky has developed a reputation as a premier, or possibly the premier, old time fiddler of our day. Amazingly he is also an accomplished guitarist, banjo player and vocalist. His art is to weave fiddle, guitar, banjo, and song into a compelling style of American and world traditional music. Bronx born, his early influences were Jimi Hendrix, Mississippi John Hurt and Taj Mahal. By the time he went to college his goal was to be a bluegrass guitarist. After being dragged to a fiddle convention in 1973 he realized that what he was actually playing was traditional Appalachian and Old Time music. Three years later he moved to Virginia to learn at the source. He melds the archaic mountain sounds of Appalachia, the power of blues and the rhythmic intricacies of traditional African music. His interests now also extend to Celtic, and Scandinavian music and he has become a sort after CD producer for other artists.

Jan Smith Duo
Virginia-Based Roots/Americana Singer-Songwriter

Friday, October 13th, 8.00pm $15 adv. /$17 door
BLUE ROCK SHOOT

14523 Big Basin Way, Saratoga, call 408-741-5180

This lady has one sweet voice and she knows how to use it. Before she visited us a couple of years ago I said her debut self produced CD, "Tin Heart", was, in my opinion, the best singer-songwriter CD (all originals) I had ever been sent. Her show, backed by her husband’s very fine mandolin and guitar playing did not disappoint, especially as it added some traditional material, such as Carter Family songs, to her own fine song-writing repertoire. A couple of quotes will give you the picture: “Jan Smith has a voice that is smooth and full of passion…one of the best folk releases we have received...” - Roots Music Report “A mixture of bluegrass, traditional country, and folk with a discerning pop ear, Smith’s songs would be as equally at home on a major motion picture soundtrack as in a Nashville club...” - The Cville Weekly Jan recently released her second, Nashville produced, CD, “29 Dances”.

AT DON QUIXOTES MUSIC HALL

Dirty Linen's Tom Nelligan writes about the new CD Reilly & Maloney Together Again: From the mid-1970s through the late 1980s, the voices-and-guitars duo of Ginny Reilly and David Maloney made delightful harmonies together, and as this new concert CD announces, they're back together after a decade-plus pursuing their solo careers. Old fans will be happy to hear that they've lost none of their vocal magic. Reilly still has one of the sweetest voices in folk music, an ethereal soprano that dances lightly around Maloney's grittier baritone, and the contrast in their voices and their unique sense of harmony makes for some wonderful duets. The largely optimistic-themed and always-thoughtful set list combines a few originals, like Maloney's pensive Alone in Silence with a wide range of covers of writers ranging from Tom Paxton and John Prine to Bruce Springsteen and Rogers & Hart. Together Again marks the welcome reunion of two distinctive performers. www.reillyandmaloney.com

Jan Smith is a Virginia-based roots/Americana singer-songwriter. Jan has her own distinctive delivery with a genre style similar in some ways to Kate Wolf's alt-country / folk approach. This lady has one sweet voice and she knows how to use it. Her show is backed by her husband's very fine mandolin and guitar playing. On stage she adds some traditional material, such as Carter Family songs, to her own fine song-writing repertoire, which include elements of folk, country, pop and bluegrass. A couple of quotes about her debut, self-produced, CD, Tin Heart, will give you the picture: "Jan Smith has a voice that is smooth and full of passion...one of the best folk releases we have received..".....Roots Music Report www.honeybirdmusic.com

Sylvia Herold of Cats & Jammers and Wake the Dead notoriety is a singer's singer, equally at home in folk, swing, Americana, and Celtic genres. As one of Australia's premier independent bands, Bluehouse combine original folk-flavored pop melodies meshed with heavenly, intricate harmonies and inspired guitar and bass playing along with witty, sardonic banter thrown in between songs. Entertaining audiences with an extremely engaging show full of beautiful singing, hot playing, clever thinking...along with wit and charm, Jacqui & Bernadette will take you on a roller-coaster ride of emotions….a "must see, must hear" the Sydney Morning Herald recognized the band's essential eclecticism, terming their music "delicious folk-pop...tinged at times with sweet gospel soul, before plunging into raucous guitar riffs" and "exuberant, sad, wise, harmonically dazzling...a lively display of both instrumental and a cappella with attitude and polished pop." Touring almost constantly, Bluehouse have shared the stage with Neil Young, Cowboy Junkies, UB40, Neil Finn, Elvis Costello, Tommy Emmanuel, Neil Finn (of Crowded House) and others. They've been compared to the likes of the Indigo Girls and k.d lang, but with a much more aggressive style. www.bluehouse.net

Essence Country Update writes: This would be a superb collection of songs from a veteran songwriter, but coming from a nineteen year old kid from Sydney it is simply a revelation. The quality of the writing, lyrically and melodically, is way beyond his years, and the commitment with which he delivers these 12 songs is no less than you'd find on an early Van or Bob album, and having seen him live many times I can assure you that there's plenty more where these gems come from. www.simonbruce.com

Nina Gerber. "Nina's guitar style is wide and brave…she uses each of her guitars as if it's the one she was born to play. Acoustic or electric, she sounds beautiful, smokey, precise, full of the licks you love to hear, even though it sounds like you're hearing them fresh, for the first time, and some of them... you are. She's a player, folks... we're lucky to have her near..." Herb Pedersen www.ninagerber.com
