The Bolos / Honky Tonk Dreamers
Fabulous Classic Country & Western Swing Double Bill
Friday, July 9th, 8.00pm. $15/$17
AT MISSION CITY COFFEE ROASTING CO.

2221 The Alameda, Santa Clara, CA 95050
call 831-475-4938 or email Brundle@attglobal.net

The common denominator to these two Bay Area bands is ace steel guitarist,
Charlie Wallace.

The Bolos are a trio consisting of leader, Don Burnham (of western swing band, Lost Weekend, fame), vocals and rhythm guitar; Charlie on steel; and Karen Horner on double and electric bass. New Zealander, Sarah Duckworth, guests. The group plays Don's originals and a mixture of well-chosen swing and country material.

The Honky Tonk Dreamers feature the soulful singing of Julay Brooks and the hot takeoff playing of Tony Marcus (fiddle and guitar) and Charlie Wallace (steel guitar), all held together by the powerful rhythm section of Julay or Tony on guitar and the rock-solid bass of Jerry Logan. With inventive arrangements and thoughtful choice of material, classic honky tonk country and western swing are the band's grooves.

Steve Key's best-known song, "33, 45, 78 (Record Time)" was recorded by country star Kathy Mattea. Dozens of other folk, country, blues and pop artists have covered his songs, and he's released six of his own albums. He's played major and three times on the main stage of the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas. Key returned to California a few years ago and lives in Pismo Beach.

Lee Garland is a heartfelt and engaging songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Raised in Moss Landing, his first instrument was the accordion. Everything went downhill from there. He went to Los Angeles in the late 70's to be part of a band of three songwriters. He then changed directions and left the music world to raise 3 beautiful girls. In 2004 his best friend invited him to a BMI songwriters festival and ever since he's been re-bitten by the writing and performing bug. He currently lives, loves, writes and records in Carmel, California.

Chris Webster & Nina Gerber
Mumbo Gumbo's Lead Singer Does American Music

AT DON QUIXOTES MUSIC HALL

6275 Highway 9 in Downtown Felton, call 831-603-2294

Chris Webster's latest album Something in the Water is now available in stores. “Webster's is an authoritative voice that manages to make existential angst, romantic confusion and spiritual longing sound uncommonly appealing. Each note she sings conveys a probing, acute sensitivity to the little complications of life and love, with a sexy edge to boot.” -No Depression Magazine.

Get to know Chris Webster, one of two lead singer-songwriters for Davis , CA band Mumbo Gumbo . "Drive", Chris's first solo foray, is an exceptional project that received a great deal of radio airplay during its release. The songs produced on that record span a range of emotions by effectively pulling from a variety of American music forms. Chris instinctively knows when to lean blues, zydeco, torch or even a little jazz - it's American music through and through.

We suggest Davis singer-songwriter Chris Webster's Something in the Water . She comes highly Raitt-ed, but this velvet voice is all her own. Hard to say just what it is about the lovely lope of “Out Here in the Real World ” that brings the tears to your eyes. The integrity, maybe? Between that one, the handsome cover (with Jackie Greene ) of Curtis Mayfield 's “ People Get Ready ,” and, well, all the other tracks, Webster shows warmth, grace and range. She's a class act." -The Sacramento News& Review

Nina Gerber's guitar style is wide and brave. As she glides thru this record project, she uses each of her guitars as if it's the one she was born to play. Acoustic or electric, she sounds beautiful, smokey, precise, full of the licks you love to hear, even though it sounds like you're hearing them fresh, for the first time, and some of them---you are.

"She's a player, folks---we're lucky to have her near..." Herb Pedersen. "One of the best acoustic and electric guitarists in the folk genre."--- Frets Magazine

The Connie Doolan Quartet
Standards, swing, Celtic, folk, and contemporary
Friday, July 23rd, 8.00pm. $15/$17
AT MISSION CITY COFFEE ROASTING CO.

2221 The Alameda, Santa Clara, CA 95050
call 831-475-4938 or email Brundle@attglobal.net

We welcome back the Connie Doolan Quartet for their annual visit. With classical, jazz, and musical theater training, music has always been Connie's living. As one of the principal vocalists of The Mighty Avalanche Choir, her beautiful soprano was heard in folk and Celtic arrangements for several years at the Fiddling Cricket Annual Holiday Party.

Over the last few years, Connie has concentrated on her own group, presenting a wide range of material from jazz standards to folk, releasing her debut CD, Haunt Your Heart, in 2006. It features beautifully arranged renditions of material ranging from Tom Waits to bluesy versions of traditional American and Irish songs, to favorite jazz standards, swing, folk, and quirky pop hits.

Accompanying and augmenting Connie's vocals will be the entirely elegant and lyrical playing of Julian Smedley on violin and viola, Mike Wallenberg on jazz guitar and Steven Strauss on upright bass and ukulele, just as they do on the CD. Most likely Julian and Mike will do a short jazz violin and guitar set of material from their own CD, A Common Language.

"A great guitarist--- my kindred spirit ." - Michael Hedges

"Better than the best of the best of the best---uber-ninja." - Andy McKee

Boundary-free, horizon-expanding, genre-bending, transcendent, soulful, kickass, mind-opening, exquisitely gorgeous instrumental solo acoustic guitar. Michael Gulezian (gu-LAY-ze-in) is one of the most highly regarded instrumental acoustic artists of our time. While it is visually breathtaking to watch him perform, a Michael Gulezian concert is more than a display of mind-blowing virtuosity – it is the communion of master musician engaged with his audience in the mystery of self-revelation, creating music of atmospheric power, ecstatic joy, and haunting beauty. The reviews speak volumes: "Gulezian's place [is] among the great acoustic guitar innovators of the 20th Century" Music Web Express ; "fingerstyle fire---virtuosic ferocity--- Michael never loses sight of the melody, or the drama of his compositions. And he can still play sweetly." Acoustic Guitar Magazine .

If you enjoy the artistry of musicians such as Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges – guitarists who amaze us with what ten fingers and one guitar can do – then you will love Michael Gulezian. Find out why Garrison Keillor said, "If I could play guitar the way Michael Gulezian does, I would just sit in front of a mirror and watch myself do it."
