Druha Trava
Bluegrass, Newgrass, Folk, Traditional - From the Czech Republic
Friday, October 1st, 8.00pm, $15/$17
AT MISSION CITY COFFEE ROASTING CO.

2221 The Alameda, Santa Clara, CA 95050
call 831-475-4938 or email Brundle@attglobal.net

A virtuoso instrumental group with a charismatic lead singer, Druha Trava perform acoustic music with strong bluegrass, folk, rock, and jazz influences. They use a basically bluegrass line-up of guitar, dobro, bass, mandolin and banjo, though you will see the banjo player pick up a clarinet and Irish whistles. You will also hear them playing Bob Dylan and possibly the overture from Smetana's opera The Bartered Bride transcribed for guitar and banjo!

Robert Krestan (lead vocals, mandolin, guitar) and Lubos Malina (banjo) founded the group in 1991 after years in a famous Czech folk group, Poutnici.

Lubos, originally a classical clarinet player, has often been voted best Czech banjo player, and has a decidedly Bela Fleck style. Lubos Novotny is a virtuoso dobro player who crosses musical boundaries and has often been Czech dobro player of the year. Emil Formanek, from the Slovak Republic, joined the group as lead guitarist in 2004, having formerly been with the bluegrass band Fragment. Thomas Liska, well-known on the European jazz scene, recently joined the band and keeps the beat for Druha Trava.

DT gained additional renown last year when they were chosen to play at Prague Castle for President Obama's visit there in April. NPR covered the show and raved about their versions of Dylan songs from the group's 2007 Dylanovsky CD. http://www.druhatrava.com/

Druha Trava is a wonderfully individual band from the Czech Republic that is hard to describe. They perform new acoustic world music with bluegrass influences. You might hear them perform a bluegrass tune, Bob Dylan tune or one by another American or British artist, or one of their many originals. Though they basically use a typical bluegrass complement of instruments, you might see the banjo player also pick up a clarinet or Irish whistle. This along with the versatility of the dobro player helps create much of their unique sound. The Bluegrass Association of the Czech Republic declared Druha Trava "Group of the Year" in both 2005 and 2006. Druha Trava have toured America many times since forming in 1991 and have been featured on premier festival stages all over the USA . http://www.druhatrava.com

Making her debut for Fiddling Cricket, from Austin, Texas, comes Brennen Leigh. Originally from Minnesota, Brennen moved to Austin in 2005 and four months later was voted Texas Music Awards' "Best Female Vocalist", a seemingly impossible feat considering the hotbed of talent that Austin is known for. Many more accomplishments followed. She auditioned for and was picked to be part of USA Network's, "Nashville Star" TV show placing in the top twenty out of 8,000+ entries. Next came a tour with Dr. Ralph Stanley and an invitation to record with Charlie Louvin. Then she was picked by popular Texas artist Jesse Dayton to be his duet partner on his 2007 release "Holding Our Own and Other Country Gold Duets".

Brennen has just released her fifth solo disc, The Box. Lending his voice on the title track is country songwriting legend, Jim Lauderdale. The album showcases Brennen's songwriting, penning all but two of the fourteen tracks, and her pure country voice. Accompanying Brennen will be her brother Seth Hulbert, a talented artist in his own right, on vocals and acoustic lead guitar and popular Aptos, California musician Charlie Wallace on dobro.

Ginny Reilly and David Maloney performed over 3000 shows together in the Bay Area-Seattle corridor in the 70's and 80's, singing and playing a mixture of originals and the best of other folk music. The blend of Ginny's lovely voice with David's fine tenor and guitar work made them the best loved duo on the West Coast folk scene. They came together again in 2000 for a few reunion concerts only, the first being on the Fiddling Cricket stage. That turned into a whole new career, and since then they have put out several new and retrospective CD's and visit the Bay Area once or twice a year.

We get repeated requests for their return from loyal fans, and try to accommodate that once a year. We are delighted to have them back on our stage once more.
