Cache Valley Drifters
Bluegrass meets the Eagles and the Dead once more!
Saturday, March 5th, 8.00pm $20/$22
AT MISSION CITY COFFEE ROASTING CO.

2221 The Alameda, Santa Clara, CA 95050
call 831-475-4938 or email Brundle@attglobal.net

Cache Valley Drifters, CVD, from the Santa Barbara region, were originally a hot bluegrass group, and then became the backing group for legendary singer-songwriter, Kate Wolf, in the 70's. Now in their 4th decade as a group, they are instantly recognizable by their driving rhythm, layered and textured ballad presentation, unique acoustic arrangements and vocalization harmony (yep, that's just about everything!). Two of the original members are still in the group (Bill Griffin, mandolin, guitar and lead vocals) and Wally Barnick (bass and lead vocals). The third member of the trio is Mike Mullins (guitar, mandolin, lead vocals), a relative newcomer (about 13 years), but a collaborator since way back. CVD have 7 albums to their credit and each member has also played in other groups and on other recordings too numerous to mention. Mike also has major songwriting credits. They perform a wide range of material from folk to pop to bluegrass, The Eagles to The Grateful Dead, little known arcane delights, and originals from Mike - all with incredible harmony and superb instrumental arrangements.

Bill Griffin moved to Hawaii a few years ago so CVD performances are now few and far between. This year they decided on a brief northern California swing only and we are honored and excited to have them back after a couple of year's absence http://www.myspace.com/cachevalleydrifters

Annie Moscow with Caren Armstrong

2221 The Alameda, Santa Clara, CA 95050

Annie Moscow is whimsical, daring, funny and poignant. Annie started her musical career as a classical pianist, then moved on to write songs for a) Sarah Vaughn, and b) Mickey Mouse! A riveting performer, Moscow commands the stage as she takes her audiences to unexpected places through creative musical arrangements, storytelling and lyrical twists. Her memorable songs often cut below people's comfort levels, expressing what others think but don't dare say.

In 2009 she performed her first one-woman show, "Philosophical Musings". According to the Phoenix Cultural Events Examiner "a delightful thought provoking mix of story telling, songs, and audience interaction from an ex-hippie…mid-life crises bite down hard, lost opportunities compete with dreams gone wrong…and we are able to laugh all the while". http://www.anniemoscow.com/

Caren Armstrong, born in Texas and resident in Oakland, has been playing guitar since 10, teaching it since 13, and singing professionally since mid-teens. Though primarily a singer-songwriter with a performance style from folk to jazz, she is at home in any musical milieu and has opened for the Beach Boys and toured with Dan Hicks as one of the Hot Licks. A petite redhead, she has soaring vocals and makes boisterous music with disarmingly honest lyrics. She is also the host of the showcase, "Celebrating Songwriters" in Oakland and a record producer to boot. She has 4 of her own. In this show she will be accompanied by Joshua Zucker on bass and harmony vocals. http://carenarmstrong.com/

"Songs about real life performed with passion and precision..." - Steve Seskin

Chris Webster and Nina Gerber

Chris Webster's voice has those ineffable qualities of vocal grain, emotional nuance, phrasing, and warmth which characterize truly great and moving singers in any style. As part of the Webster Sisters she has played for Fiddling Cricket several times in the past, with sister Cassie, guitarist Scott Nygaard, and bassist Cindy Brown, performing mostly folk material. In this show she covers a wider range of material, including her own as a songwriter, accompanied by the fabulous guitar work of Nina Gerber. http://www.chriswebstermusic.com/

"…each note she sings conveys a probing, acute, sensitivity to the little complications in life and love, with a sexy edge to boot". - No Depression Magazine

After originally coming to prominence as accompanist to Kate Wolf, Nina Gerber spent two decades as "guitarist of choice" for recordings and performances with a huge number of folk performers, as well becoming a respected producer and arranger. During this time, though she never sought the limelight and never appeared as the main artist on a record cover, she earned a devoted following from those who truly listened. She always emphasizes taste over technical skill (which she has in abundance), providing a soulful enhancement to the music she is accompanying. Finally, after appearing on, or producing, over 60 albums, she has released two solo CDs. http://www.ninagerber.com

"One of the best acoustic and electric guitarists in the folk genre." - Frets Magazine

Montana Skies, Jonathon and Jennifer Adams from Georgia, are an electrifying live concert experience: a duo with the full spectrum of an orchestra crossed with the energy of a rock band. Montana Skies creates a sound much bigger than any two instruments should rightfully produce. By fusing traditional sounds with new technology, they generate music with multiple layers, textures and rhythm...and it's all created live! In concert the duo delves into music from Pink Floyd to Vivaldi, as well as their own, award winning, originals that have been featured everywhere from NPR to the Travel Channel. Montana Skies' touring has taken them all across the US, Canada and to Asia and Russia. Jennifer plays cello and six-string electric cello. Jonathan plays Spanish/classical guitar, and steel string guitar. While the music defies simple categorization, it is a fusion in the truest sense of the word. It's been called everything from chamber rock to psychedelic strings, but its certainly not your granny's chamber music! http://www.montanaskiesmusic.com

Paul Kamm and Eleanore MacDonald, from Nevada City, CA, have been performing their original, contemporary folk music for over 30 years. Their work is graced by ethereal harmonies, compelling lyrics, Paul's intricate guitar work and arrangements, and stunning a cappella duets. They have song-writing and singing awards too numerous to mention and at least 9 albums to their credit. Their most recent, From the Fire released last year, is, in my opinion, the best they have ever done.

Paul and Eleanore are also tireless workers for peace and justice and unreconstructed hippy leftists who have worked alongside the likes of Utah Phillips, and have performed for anti-war rallies, Amnesty International, Amy Goodman's "Democracy Now", and on many community radio stations. They played once for Fiddling Cricket many years ago and it is a delight to have them return. http://www.kammmac.com/

"…wonderful songs which they sing together beautifully...Two fine voices from the West that deserve a wider audience." - Utah Phillips

Michael McNevin has logged 15 years of concerts across the U.S. from his Bay Area base, and has been a main stager at the Strawberry, Kerrville, and Philadelphia folk festivals.. He has a unique voice, is an accomplished steel string guitarist, and, above all, is known for his vivid brand of storytelling in his lyrics. He is a past winner of the Kerrville New-folk award in Texas, and a 5-time winner of the West Coast Songwriters Association "Song of The Year".

"Michael is one of folk music's best kept secrets. His voice is hypnotic, his guitar playing superb..." - Christine Lavin

Modern folk musicians Paul Kamm and Eleanore MacDonald , from Nevada City, CA., have been writing and performing original, contemporary folk music for 28 years. A blend of contemporary and traditional styles, their music is graced by exquisite harmony, compelling songwriting, deceptively simple arrangements and intricate guitar work… all embraced by great heart. They've been applauded throughout the US as well as overseas for the lyrical content of their songs and vocal blend…a haunting style which weaves unique harmonies into a rich tapestry of guitar work and storytelling.http://www.kammmac.com/

Long-time favorites in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas , Alisa Fineman and Kimball Hurd have also earned national acclaim, touring all over the country, appearing at festivals such as California's Strawberry and Kate Wolf Memorial Festival, Austin's South-By-Southwest, the Kerrville Folk Festival , the Connecticut Family Folk Festival and the Wizards of Wooden Music. Renown for her world-class alto voice with it's dusky tones and depth of emotion, Alisa is perfectly complimented by multi-instrumentalist Kimball Hurd. Hurd, a Bammie (Bay Area Music Association) Award winner, adds dimension to the duo's performances with vocal harmonies and an array of tasteful musical accents with guitar, mandolin, mandola, dobro, banjo and slide guitar , and steps forward on occasion to offer a song from his own catalog of powerful originals. http://www.alisafineman.com/alisakimball.htm

Recently, John Jorgenson was chosen to portray Django Reinhardt in the feature film Head in the Clouds . At a John Jorgenson Quintet performance , audiences are amazed by John's dazzling guitar work as well as his mastery as a clarinet player and vocalist. Whether playing his own accessible compositions or classic standards, John and his band make music that is equally romantic and ecstatic, played with virtuosity and soul.
