What happens when three bluegrass, jazz, and classical musicians play Texas folk and alt country with south American influences? Michael Shay’s remarkable trio, based in Quito, Ecuador shouldn’t be missed! His lush baritone voice and guitar, fellow Texan Ryan Hagler’s upright bass and harmony vocals, and French guitarist, Donald Regnier (resonator and slide guitar) combine for an unforgettable repertoire.

Shay’s songwriting recalls his earliest influences: Townes Van Zandt, Neil Young, Dylan and the Dead.  Born in Austin, he has performed and taught in Europe, North Africa, and North and South America for 20 years. 7 previous releases, spanning Balkan, rock, folk, swing, country tango, Latin and classical ( he’s a cello player) have led to his latest release Decadence:  10 Years of Music: 2002 – 2012 showcasing his diversity. The current West Coast tour is in support of this new release.

Starting out as a banjo prodigy who was playing bluegrass festivals before he entered his teens, Flinner later took up the mandolin, won the National Banjo Competition in Winfield, KS in 1990, and won the mandolin award there the following year. Matt is now widely considered one of the hottest and most creative mandolin players on the acoustic scene.  http://www.mattflinner.com

Scott Nygaard is one of the most inventive and original guitarists in the bluegrass/acoustic music scene. His solos, a seamless amalgam of bluegrass, folk, and jazz influences, shift easily from breathtaking virtuosity to soulful melodic musings.  "a phenomenally talented stylist"— Downbeat.   http://www.scottnygaard.com

George Christos and John Begley have been performing as "Those Guys" in the Santa Cruz area for more than 30 years. They cover a blend of pop, folk, country and blues from the 60's and 70's, with lots of tight vocal harmonies backed by guitars and mandolin. George also adds his original songs and John plays a variety of original instrumentals for solo guitar.

George’s original songs are vivid stories of life experiences and observations. John’s original instrumentals range from slow ballads to lively Celtic and Latin, carrying a strong melody line. They also enjoy seeing the audience join in with well-known cover material.

George and John have played in our series twice before with lots of fun and lots of nostalgia!

From Carnegie Hall to the Dr. Demento Show and almost everything between are stops along the way for Cosy Sheridan and her music. She has garnered top honors from some of the most prestigious song writing contests: The Kerrville Folk Festival’s New Folk award, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival’s Troubadour Award and the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Songwriting Showcase Award. Trained in voice at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, she is also an excellent fingerstyle guitarist. She travels with her yoga mat, but without her gallbladder. She is compassionate, very sharp, and will talk about anything on stage. She may sing songs about body piercing, a more user-friendly Barbie Doll, the loneliness of an elderly neighbor, or how small and humble things in life can sew your heart back together. One way or another she will make you cry. Cosy has CD’s in double figures to her name.

We are delighted to have her return to our intimate space.
