Birds of Chicago plus Matt The Electrician
Blending the energy of seismic, secular gospel, keen imagery, poignant song craft and infectious stage presence

FC Cosponsored Show Presented with Snazzy Productions

Birds Of Chicago: “With Echoes of deep gospel in Russell's voice as she sings over a mix of electric guitar, resonant piano, and percussion---at once uplifting and a little melancholy.” – Wall Street Journal. Stark, elemental imagery that feels like scripture, or a lost folk song recovered the Birds draw heavily on the gospel tradition and the music feels like a new, secular gospel of sorts. For Birds of Chicago, every word counts. Every note counts. No gold-dusting, no filler. Music is the good news and Real Midnight, the band's poignant new album, throbs with an urgency that feels quietly seismic. Birds of Chicago was born in 2012 when Nero began writing for his vocal star-muse, Russell. Both were accomplished singer/songwriters with projects of their own, Nero with JT and the Clouds, and Russell with the acclaimed Canadian roots outfit Po' Girl, but together there was an unmistakable chemistry. Nero had found the perfect voice for his rock and roll psalms. Russell moved from being a primary songwriter to an interpreter, and her simmering restraint is deeply refreshing to a landscape scorched by post Voice/American Idol vocal gymnastics and over- emoting. http://www.birdsofchicago.com

Matt The Electrician: Despite the name, Matt the Electrician is no longer an electrician, focusing instead on a music career that has spanned the course of two decades, a dozen records, and literally thousands of shows. It's folk music for a modern age, rooted in lyrics that focus on the realities and challenges of the 21st century as opposed to, say, the old-school thrill of hopping trains. http:// www.matttheelectrician.com

David Francey is a Scottish born Canadian carpenter-turned-songwriter, who has become one of Canada's most revered folk poets and singers (Toronto Star). For decades he worked across Canada in rail yards, construction sites, and the Yukon bush. In his 40's, encouraged by his wife to share his songs and sing in public, his 1999 recording debut, "Torn Screen Door" contained much of his experiences in that working class life. It was an immediate success. Since then he has won the coveted Canadian Juno Award in the Roots and Traditional category 3 times and released 11 CDs. He has also won the Grand Prize in the folk category of the John Lennon Song Writing Awards. His songs have been covered by many well-known artists; for example Mollie O'Brien, Del McCoury, and James Keelaghan. http://www.davidfrancey.com

In concert David's wry humor and astute observations, combined with his telling lyrics, earn him new fans at every performance. He is accompanied on this tour by James McKie a highly accomplished fiddle and guitar player in the Celtic and folk styles. Only twenty seven, he already has three albums to his name and is renowned for playing with maturity and tastefulness. It is perhaps telling that when David played for Fiddling Cricket some 6 years ago he actually sold more CD's than the total number of people in the audience!
"… one of Canada's most revered folk poets and singers. His songs are small and beautifully crafted pieces of work." - Greg Quill, Toronto Star

The universe of guitar knows no boundaries for The California Guitar Trio. Since 1991, the group has enthralled listeners with a singular sound that fearlessly crisscrosses genres. The trio's questing spirit drives it to explore the intersections between rock, jazz, classical, and world music. It even throws in the occasional surf or spaghetti Western tune for good measure. Comprised of Bert Lams, Hideyo Moriya and Paul Richards, the group has established a unique, personal connection with audiences. In addition to dazzling musicianship and interplay, The California Guitar Trio's (CGT) shows are full of captivating stories and humor that enable concertgoers to feel like they're part of the music, not just spectators. In fact, the group's goal is to transcend their instruments, so people focus on the music first, and its considerable technical prowess a distant second. CGT's 14 albums, streamed over 53 million times on Pandora, offer diverse snapshots of the group's mercurial muse. http://www.cgtrio.com
