Western Centuries plus CALICO the band
Tonight Witness the Vanguard of New, Exciting Cosmic Rocking Country
Wednesday, September 6th, 7.30pm $10/$10
21 and over
FC Cosponsored Show
AT DON QUIXOTES MUSIC HALL
6275 Highway 9 in Downtown Felton, Reservations online or call 831-603-2294

Western Centuries: Comprised of Seattle-based country musician Cahalen Morrison, jam band veteran Jim Miller (co-founder of Donna the Buffalo), R&B and bluegrass-by-way-of-punk rock songwriter Ethan Lawton, pedal steel player Rusty Blake, and bassist Dan Lowinger, Western Centuries are clearly a diverse bunch.

"If it seems crazy to compare any band today to giants like the Band and the Flying Burrito Brothers, then call me crazy, but Western Centuries is the country supergroup we've been waiting for: three first-rate lead singers, each of whom writes solid, heartwarming and heartbreaking country songs, together in one band.” —Kristin Cavoukian, Exclaim! Magazine.

Round up a country band and an early R&B group with three lead vocalists, weave in a hefty amount of vocal harmony and witty turns-of-phrase, and let ‘em rock out like The Band. With upbeat, barroom dance numbers, lilting, introspective tunes of heartbreak, and everything in between, the album strikes a rarely achieved balance between genre-busting experimentation and thoughtful continuity. http://www.westerncenturies.com

CALICO the band is a California band in the deepest, most natural sense of the term. Specifically, the moniker (all caps, please) is shorthand for California country—as if that weren't vividly apparent from the first moments of Under Blue Skies, the group's resonant, accomplished sophomore album, with its musical intricacy, lyrical eloquence and timeless immediacy. The thought-provoking, tightly harmonized songs of founder/leaders Manda Mosher and Kirsten Proffit exist in a continuum with the seminal form Gram Parsons famously dubbed Cosmic American Music. "The best of L.A.'s country past, present and future clearly emerges from Calico's debut, Rancho California." - Terry Roland, No Depression. www.calicotheband.com

Dan Crary (guitar) is an acoustic flatpicking legend in the bluegrass/newgrass community. He has toured more than 30 countries and made more than 15 albums since 1969. For 20 years he was a member of the California bluegrass band, Berline, Crary and Hickman. He is revered for his tone, fluidity, and speed on his solo licks. In addition to playing in many groups over the years he also gives a fascinating solo show on the history of the guitar. He is also a Professor of Speech Communications. www.dancrary.com

Bill Evans (banjo) is a performer, teacher, writer, and composer with a UC Berkeley Masters in Music and American Music History. In addition to being a sort after band player in both traditional and progressive bluegrass, he also presents a solo show covering the history of the banjo in all styles and ages, using some dozen or more different types of banjo. He has both performed with the SF Symphony and appeared on Prairie Home Companion. www.billevansbanjo.com

Wally Barnick (bass) held down the rhythm section of our favorite Californian Americana band, The Cache Valley Drifters, for decades, but is primarily recognizable in the group by his fine soulful vocals. www.wallybarnickmusic.com

From the time he was a young boy growing up in Palolo Valley on Oahu, John Cruz knew he was destined to play music. Whether inside or outside the home, his earliest memories were filled with song. His Hawaiian grandmother had a beautiful voice and sang in church. His mom loved the Motown sound and had an extensive record collection. His dad played country music and taught John to perform live shows at a very young age. His brothers and sisters were all musically inclined and, along with numerous aunties, uncles, cousins, neighbors and friends, they have surrounded John with the gift of music for his entire life. John performed at President Barack Obama's historic inauguration in Washington DC in 2009 www.johncruz.com

They were here a year ago and gave a wonderful performance to a full house. We are delighted to have them return!

Del Rey, based in Seattle, is a world class performer of vintage blues, jazz, country blues, and ragtime, playing resonator guitar and ukulele, and strongly influenced by the sound and material of Memphis Minnie from the 20's and 30's. An alumnus of UCSC, she and Carl Rey were staples of the music scene in Santa Cruz 30 years ago. www.delreyplays.com

"Rey is one of the greatest modern players of the metal-bodied resonator guitar" - Acoustic Guitar Magazine

Adam Franklin, from the UK, is also an excellent exponent of blues and ragtime from the golden age of American music. Like Del Rey he plays resonator guitar and ukulele, and has a strong soulful voice. www.adamfranklinblues.com
