Chuck Brodsky said "if you ever get a chance to book this guy - do it! He is as good as it gets!" So I did, and again, and again! He returns to the Ugly Mug for his 3rd intimate show…one guitar, one voice, non-stop for 45 minutes, and then again for another 45.

JackWilliams' bio in itself is amazing, with a 55+ year career playing folk, rock jazz, R and B, classical and popular music from the 30's, 40's, and 50's. In the 60's he was a hired gun guitarist/ band leader for John Lee Hooker, Hank Ballard, and the Shirelles, amongst others. Up to the 80's he played jazz trumpet and classical guitar, while also fronting a series of original rock bands as an electric guitarist. In the 60's he started touring as a solo troubadour and for the last 25 years that has been his main gig, doing 100's of shows a year. His songs have been recorded by others ranging from Tom Jones to Tom Paxton. At times he has teamed up with other great singers - the late Harry Nilsson in 1973, and until 2002 with his friend, the late Mickey Newberry. Jack has at least 9 solo CD's of original music, plus involvement in many others. www.jackwilliamsmusic.com

"a musical style that's equal parts folk storytelling and Tin Pan Alley songcraft, delivered with the impassioned soul of an old blues singer" - Kevin Oliver, No Depression Magazine

".... his artistry... is nothing short of amazing. Dazzling picking, expressive voice, unique and interesting songs. He is a showman in the best sense of the word and just wowed our audience. I think they would have followed him anywhere." - Rich Warren, WFMT "Midnight Special", Chicago IL

The originality and sheer energy of this genre-bending ensemble serves as a welcome wake up call for those who experience it. With roots in gypsy jazz, bluegrass, and hip-hop in an “exhilarating all-acoustic swirl” (Acoustic Guitar Magazine), Jon Stickley Trio combines Jon Stickley's rapid-fire flatpicking guitar with the sultry and wild, yet refined, melodies of Lyndsay Pruett on violin set over the deep groove of Patrick Armitage on drums. The three have fused their collective styles into a repertoire of exciting and innovative original music along with some captivating covers. Lost at Last was recorded in the band's hometown of Asheville, NC at the iconic Echo Mountain Studios under the watchful eye of producer Dave King (The Bad Plus). www.jonstickley.com

CALICO the band is a California band in the deepest, most natural sense of the term. Specifically, the moniker (all caps, please) is shorthand for California country—as if that weren't vividly apparent from the first moments of Under Blue Skies, the group's resonant, accomplished sophomore album, with its musical intricacy, lyrical eloquence and timeless immediacy. The thought-provoking, tightly harmonized songs of founder/leaders Manda Mosher and Kirsten Proffit exist in a continuum with the seminal form Gram Parsons famously dubbed Cosmic American Music. "The best of L.A.'s country past, present and future clearly emerges from Calico's debut, Rancho California." - Terry Roland, No Depression. www.calicotheband.com

We describe this as a "Double Date" night because of the pairing of our local bass playing cowgirl singer / hot-shot guitarist husband duo, with a similar touring duo from the mid-west. Both duos will be backed by percussionist Jimmy Norris, who also appears on both group's recorded material.

Carolyn Sills and husband, Gerard Egan are best known as 2/5ths of the Carolyn Sills Combo, which over their 6 years existence here in Santa Cruz, has established a stellar reputation locally and nationally for their mixture of western swing, rockabilly, country (particularly Patsy Cline tributes) and, more and more, their own original material in these genres. It is an honor to get them on The Mug stage as a duo. www.carolynsillscombo.com

Medicinal Purposes (Scott Kerry Guthrie and "Cowgirl" Pearl Olson) are an Americana/alt.country/blues duo from the Driftless region of the mid-west. Like Gerard and Carolyn they provide flawless harmony and craft intelligent, witty, and heartfelt original lyrics, and can rockabilly it up with the best of them. Though well-known and respected in their locality, they are unknown here and are touring the West Coast in support of their recent CD, "That's What I am Talking About", produced by Bay Area local, John Jacob. www.medicinalpurposesduo.com

Mike Beck
A Celebration of the Songs of Stephen Stills and Neil Young

Mike Beck is an engaging acoustic solo artist who regularly performs in the US and Europe. He is a regularly featured performer at The National Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering. Mike has 7 albums under his belt with original songs that have been recognized as some of the finest compositions on Western Americana out there. His strong command of the guitar, reminiscent of Stephen Stills, has also garnered him many requests for guitar workshops at festivals.

Growing up in California Mike was really exposed to the California-West Coast sounds, including the work of Stills and Neil Young…the sounds of well written and performed songs, enriched by great playing on those old Martin guitars they both used. So in recent years he started listening to, and learning, some of those performances from the late 60's and early 70's, on Youtube. So to test himself he put together a show, "A Celebration of the Acoustic Songs of Stephen Stills and Neil Young" and has been performing it in the US and Europe. Mike says "It's been an amazing experience. I do it out of complete respect to these two artists. I do it for the challenge. I do it to keep great songs alive. I do it for that Martin guitar sound....and mostly I do it because it's fun as hell!" www.mikebeck.com

According to Ramblin' Jack Elliot, "Mike Beck plays the guitar like a Byrd. His strings do things that mine could never do. They obey the slightest finger-touch commands like a fine Reining Horse."

Big Sandy in his own words: Twenty-five years, fourteen albums & hundreds of thousands of miles. What a dream it's been. When I first got together for a garage rehearsal with a group of musician friends in the spring of 1988 in Anaheim, California, I never dreamed that I would someday be celebrating the silver anniversary of the rocking little bandthat formed that afternoon. Yet here I am, looking back over a wild ride that has taken us around the world countless times, that has put us in front of national television audiences, and - most importantly - that has given me the opportunity to play the music that I grew up having such a passion for - Rockabilly, Rock & Roll, Honky-Tonk, Rhythm & Blues, Soul and Doo-Wop and now with the release of our all-acoustic album “What A Dream It's Been”, even a touch of Jamaican Rocksteady. Putting together the new record for Cow Island Music has brought back a flood of memories; we went through our entire catalogue of LP's, picked out some of our favorite original numbers, and gave them fresh new arrangements, rhythms, and instrumentations. In many ways , it was our way of looking back at everything that has led us to where we are now, while looking forward towards new musical horizons.

Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards

Laura Cortese and the Dance Cards have a vision for their band's sound: bold and elegant, schooled in the lyrical rituals of folk music and backed by grooves that alternately inspire Cajun two-stepping and rock-n-roll hip swagger. Their new album California Calling comes out on October 6th. On their CD release tour, Cellist Valerie Thompson (cello/vox), fiddler Jenna Moynihan (fiddle/vox), and Zoe Guigueno (bass/vox) pair their sophisticated string arrangements and rich vocal harmonies to band leader Laura Cortese's poignant and powerful singing. For their forthcoming album, the band is exploring their special and less common instrumentation with the support of Sam Kassirer, album producer of folk-pop favorites like Lake Street Dive and Joy Kills Sorrow. The new record has a wide emotional and sonic scope. The four voices are just as much instruments as they are providers for lyric and harmony. At times its rowdy, delicate and cinematic. The result is a sound that can start as a string band, and morph into a string quartet, female acappella group, or indie band; all while staying honest and true to their identity as folk instrumentalists. This is post-folk that seriously rocks. http://www.thisislauracortese.com

Paper Wings is a new old-fashioned acoustic duo featuring Emily Mann and Wilhelmina Frankzerda. These two young artists have been deeply immersed in the West Coast music scene for most of their lives. Now they are joining forces to create music that's based on their shared love of tradition, old beauty, and the compelling need for new and original sounds. Their duo features classic vocal harmonies over a rotating cast of fiddles, guitar, and banjo. Between the two of them they have had the pleasure of performing with Aoife O'donovan, Darol Anger, Sean Watkins, Darrell Scott, Laurie Lewis, Tim O'Brien, Mike Marshall, Kai Welch, John Reischman, and Rushad Eggleston. Their debut album was just released in February 2017. Their music is fine and supple, rough and ready, innovative and timeless. http://www.paperwingsmusic.com

The polyrhythmic heat of Evie Ladin's clawhammer banjo, resonant voice, real stories and rhythmic dance have been heard from A Prairie Home Companion to Celtic Connections, Lincoln Center to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Known as a driving force behind San Francisco's Stairwell Sisters, Evie's solo debut Float Downstream (2010), co-produced by Mike Marshall and Keith Terry, was quickly followed by Evie Ladin Band (2012), which won Americana Album of the Year by the Independent Music Awards Vox Pop Vote. The 2016 release of JUMP THE FIRE showcases the ELB evolving into a tight trio, with mature, playful, driving songs, and a 4-dimensional live show. http://www.evieladin.com
