Dirk Hamilton has just released his 19th album which is described as "raw and real," "inventive," and "delicately nuanced," with "a bluesy, contemplative feel." He's bringing his guitar and harmonica to the Ugly Mug to play songs covering his over 40 years in the music business.

Dirk was born in Indiana and raised in California. He moved from Stockton to Los Angeles in the late 70s and went into the studio with Steely Dan's producer, Gary Katz, who helped him get a deal with ABC Records. Four albums, two record companies, and a brush with near fame later, he returned to Stockton and counseled troubled teens, while playing for fun in a bar band when the inspiration to write returned. After recording a few more albums, he found out that his music had a following in Italy, and he started playing there every year, fronting a blues band. He's currently based in Plano, Texas, but Italy remains a second home. He has been to England, Switzerland, and the Netherlands on his European tours. www.dirkhamilton.com

Dirk has asked Marky Starks to play a few songs as an opener. Glenn MacPherson will accompany her on guitar. She'll play a few old songs and couple of new ones. It'll be a good start to a wonderful concert with Dirk.

"Dirk's music radiates from the crossroads of Passion and Smart"…Derk Richardson, KPFA, Berkeley

"lucid, intelligent, and distinctive songs"……Austin Chronicle

Darol Anger is a unique fiddle guru, who spent three decades reinventing American string music to encompass his explorations of bluegrass, jazz, and music from around the world. The groups that he founded or co-founded include the David Grisman Quintet, the Turtle Island String Quartet, Psychograss, Montreux, and the Republic of Strings ensemble. His playing and composition overflow with passion, prodigious technique, and a generous sense of humor. He has spent his career enlightening and inspiring his fellow musicians, and vice-versa. That's where the Furies come in. The Furies, led by Darol and his musical partner singer/songwriter Emy Phelps, are a handpicked collection of multi-generational virtuoso musicians drawn from Darol's vast network of talent. Cruz Control started with Vince Tuzzi (guitar/vocals and ukulele) and Stan Parola (guitar/vocals/and ukulele/harmonica). They have evolved into one of the most sought-after bands in Santa Cruz County. A big part of the band's popularity stems from the fact that they play a diverse genre of music from John Prine to Neil Young, Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Bob Marley, Van Morrison, The Beatles, and The Eagles. Apart from the fact that each band member is an accomplished musician, they also have a unique vocal blend which lends itself to different kinds of music. Each member in the band has their own distinct following. Vince Tuzzi is a well-known solo artist and Jerry Whitney plays bass and vocals. https://www.facebook.com/Cruz-Control-166542066831264/

Fiddling Cricket & Canyon Acoustic Society Concert Series 2018

Villanelle began when Lynnette Mello and Karen Rodriguez met in the fall of 2011. Having a natural vocal blend, and a similar passion for music as therapy, they started out singing a cappella for bed-bound patients in hospice care. Since then they have expanded their music and have broadened their audience, completing their first album of original music in 2015, Paint Me a Song.

A villanelle is a type of poetry, and each of their original songs is a creatively crafted poem set to music in the style of country/folk and Americana with an Appalachian influence. They accompany themselves with a variety of acoustic instruments that include dulcimer, concertina, recorder, flute, ukulele, autoharp, guitar and piano, and have recently added a bass player, Oscar Rodriguez, Karen's husband. Their family friendly music appeals to all ages. Some of their songs will tug on your heart, and others will make you smile as they were written for just plain fun. Recently they completed their second album, Light Path. With their goal of bringing joy, comfort, positivity and meaning to others through their music, they hope to inspire and touch the hearts of listeners. "When you're lost and confused and feeling all alone, I will send the light path to lead you home.", from their title song, Light Path.

On Sunday, July 22nd, 7pm, at The Ugly Mug, Villanelle will be sharing songs from both of their albums, and celebrating the release of Light Path. www.villanellemusic.com

The Quitters A guitar duo of right-side up finger picking (Stevie Coyle) and upside down flat picking (Glenn Houston). The Quitters deliver a performance spiced with humor and serendipity. http://www.quittersduo.com

Strawberry Music Festival Quote: "Stevie Coyle and Glenn Houston make up the dynamic guitar duo, The Quitters. Having each quit some of the best bands in the business, both are late founding members of The Waybacks and each have performed at Strawberry in other configurations. Stevie Coyle has an illustrious career as an entertainer that began well before birth and Glenn Houston's well decorated history in music is best known to ‘berry heads for his founding role of powerhouse Americana quintet, Houston Jones. As individuals, both are renowned players in music circles. Now they have joined forces, to the delight of California audiences, to become a right-handed, right-side up fingerpicking and left-handed upside down flatpicking twosome. Mostly acoustic. Some electric. Much serendipity."

Following decades of success in their respective careers, Northern California musicians Nell Robinson & Jim Nunally are touring this year with a brand new album, Baby Lets Take the Long Way Home. Look for them this year at the Freshgrass Festival and the Vancouver Folk Festival.

Nunally, a Grammy and IBMA Award recipient, and Western Open flatpicking champion, tells No Depression, “We were driving home from L.A. on our tour, talking about getting off the main road and taking the long way. Then we actually did it! It made the trip so much more interesting and enjoyable, not taking the same route everyone else takes.

Robinson, hot off a tour for her PBS show/album Rose of No Man’s Land, produced by Joe Henry and featuring Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, John Doe, and author Maxine Hong Kingston adds, “It’s about being in a different time in your life too. So, the idea of turning off the phone, not using the GPS, and maybe even getting lost – wouldn’t that be fun?

Friends since 2009, Robinson and Nunally teamed up for a number of projects before falling in love. For Baby Lets Take the Long Way Home, they rustled up what became their dream team: pedal steel player Pete Grant (The Grateful Dead, Guy Clark), bass fiddle player Jim Kerwin (David Grisman, Jerry Garcia), and percussionist Jon Arkin (Lee Konitz, Gene Perla).

Nell Robinson and Jim Nunally have appeared at the Kennedy Center, Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, PBS series Music Gone Public, Kate Wolf Music Festival and Strawberry Music Festival.
