The Sweet Potatoes come out of Southern California to dish up a tasty blend of country, folk and homespun Americana, with sweet soaring harmonies and finely crafted songwriting. Featuring their original music, unique versions of covers and traditional songs, and some down home storytelling, their shows are full of joy and laughter, with a back-porch charm all their own.

Kelly Macleod (writer, vocals, guitar) cut her teeth on the road after being discovered by Eddie Van Halen while singing at a local club in Shreveport, La. Eddie brought her band, Private Life on a world tour with him, and produced their two albums. Laura Hall (writer, vocals, guitar, accordion) is best known as the pianist on television's Whose Line is it Anyway, and came up in the Chicago acoustic music scene, playing in bands with Michael Smith, Buddy Mondlock, and Tim Grimm.

The Sweet Potatoes came together after Kelly co-starred, and Laura did music for an indie film written by Rick Hall (bass, harmonica, vocals). Out of that collaborative process, the women started writing together, soon making three CDs. Their latest, Headin' Home, was described by Americana Magazine as "full of polish and soul, centered around delightful songwriting... featuring insightful lyrics and polished harmonies".

Although they're all old hands at performing, this is the new music from their hearts, the songs that really tell their stories, all with sweet harmonies and a touch of twang. "It doesn't get more down home than this" - Jacksonville Journal-Courier http://www.thesweetpotatoes.com/

From Carnegie Hall to the Dr. Demento Show and almost everything between are stops along the way for Cosy Sheridan and her music. She has garnered top honors from some of the most prestigious song writing contests: The Kerrville Folk Festival's New Folk award, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival's Troubadour Award and the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Songwriting Showcase Award. Trained in voice at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, she is also an excellent fingerstyle guitarist. She travels with her yoga mat, but without her gallbladder. She is compassionate, very sharp, and will talk about anything on stage. She may sing songs about body piercing, a more user-friendly Barbie Doll, the loneliness of an elderly neighbor, or how small and humble things in life can sew your heart back together. One way or another she will make you cry. Cosy has CD's in double figures to her name. https://www.cosysheridan.com/

"...a keen and wicked eye for the excesses of our fast-food, TV-happy and noisome culture" - Boston Globe

Misner & Smith plus Hilary & Kate
Timeless, stirring American folk, rock, gospel, bluegrass and roots music
Wednesday, November 28th, 7:30pm $12/$15
<21 w/parent
FC Cosponsored Show, Presented with Snazzy Productions
AT MICHAEL'S ON MAIN
2591 Main St, Soquel, CA 95073, Reservations online or call 831 479 9777

Misner & Smith: a combination of soaring vocal harmonies, extremely tight instrumental arrangements, and story-filled, poetic songwriting, adding up to some of the most electrifying music on the scene today. The band's sound harkens back to the bedrock of American rock & folk, but the diversity of styles and genres are one of the things that set M&S apart. They can shake the walls like a freight train and then quiet the room to a whisper in a single song. With two singers who could easily lead a band independently, Sam Misner and Megan Smith sing with one voice, with music that captures longing and belonging in the same moment. https://misnerandsmith.com

Hilary & Kate: There's something timeless and stirring about the music of Hilary Watson and Kate Feldtkeller, As their two voices, guitar, and violin intertwine, they conjure up echoes of time-honored musical traditions rooted in folk, bluegrass, and gospel while putting a fresh spin on these sounds as only young artists can. In early 2012, Hilary and Kate began playing and recording together; Hilary was already seasoned from years of traveling and performing both solo acoustic and with her full band, but Kate brought something new and unique with her voice and violin that instantly clicked. The year ended up being one of rich blessing for Hilary and Kate, with extensive tours throughout the US, Italy, the UK, Hungary, Norway, the Netherlands, and Germany, and a December tour in Hawaii to finish up the year. Hilary and Kate's combined talents make for a fresh and compelling musical partnership that is not to be missed. Catch them if you can in a live setting where the chemistry of their songwriting, storytelling, deft musicanship, and rich singing remind the listener of how music can speak to us like nothing else.http://hilaryandkate.com

Sherry Austin / Rick Shea
Americana, covers and originals

Local, Sherry Austin, who founded and led Henhouse, has played several concerts with this band at The Ugly Mug over the 9 years of our series there. Henhouse are no longer in existence, but Sherry will give a solo performance, splitting the bill with Rick Shea. Her material is pure Americana - a mixture of classic folk, country-folk, and folk-rock, and she sings only where it's comfortable - no screaming or stretching. Her compositions, and the covers she chooses, show off her warm contralto voice, fully engaging the audience with her lyrical skills and clarity of delivery. Sherry is, of course, a huge Kate Wolf fan, performing much of Kate's material and being regularly invited to perform at the Kate Wolf Festival. Her CD, Love Still Remains, is a collection of Kate Wolf songs.http://www.sherry-austin.com/

"In her unassuming way, she is a much bigger talent than she gives herself credit for" - Brad Kava, SJ Mercury News.

Rick Shea is a deeply evocative singer and a formidable acoustic and electric guitarist. He grew up where the urban sprawl of East LA met the desert of San Bernadino, and, right out of high school, became immersed in both the coffee house folk and the country scenes of that time (1978) and place, playing 7 nights a week as a sideman and singer. Since then he has worked as a multi-instrumental sideman with several well-known groups, most notably touring with, and opening for, Dave Alvin and The Guilty Men for many years. Parallel to this he has developed a successful solo career, covering a wide range of styles from hard country to traditional folk, all with equal ease and confidence, as demonstrated on his first solo CD, Shelter Valley Blues, released a few years ago. He has made a couple more since then. https://rickshea.com/
