Bruce Molsky

Bruce Molsky has developed a reputation as a premier, or possibly the premier, old time fiddler of our day. Amazingly he is also an accomplished guitarist, banjo player and vocalist. His art is to weave fiddle, guitar, banjo, and song into a compelling style of American and world traditional music. Bronx born, his early influences were Jimi Hendrix, Mississippi John Hurt and Taj Mahal. By the time he went to college his goal was to be a bluegrass guitarist. After being dragged to a fiddle convention in 1973 he realized that what he was actually playing was traditional Appalachian and Old Time music. Three years later he moved to Virginia to learn at the source. He melds the archaic mountain sounds of Appalachia, the power of blues and the rhythmic intricacies of traditional African music. His interests now also extend to Celtic, and Scandinavian music and he has become a sort after CD producer for other artists. www.brucemolsky.com/

Seldom has there been an album with such joyous music-making, such corrosive, acid-etched lyrics." - WM Smith, No Depression. "With its new album 'Grapevine,' the evocatively named band I See Hawks In L.A. has secured its place at the head of the city's country-rock and psychedelic cowboy faction." - Richard Cromelin, Los Angeles Times www.iseehawks.com

New England fiddler and folk singer Lissa Schneckenburger grew up in Maine as an active member of the folk music and dance community. She graduated from The New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts (2001). While embracing a diverse pallet of musical influences, she still stays true to her New England roots. Lissa’s newest release, on Footprint Records (Feb 2005), shows just that. It’s a rich and cohesive mix of traditional and original material brought together by the warm tones of her fiddle and sweet vocals throughout. Add to that the energetic buzz of a top-notch band and you’ve got a match made in heaven. Acoustic guitar, double bass, mandolin, viola, cello, and percussion all add to the traditional fiddle tunes and ballads. www.lissafiddle.com

Who is JIMMY CHICKENPANTS? No one really knows, but the band hales from the Santa Cruz area. They traditionally put the 'hick' in 'chicken' with music that combines bluegrass, newergrass, jazzgrass, and originalgrass, otherwise known as "poultry in motion". Jimmy's influences apparently include Bill Monroe, Gillian Welch, Bela Fleck, Duke Ellington, and most significantly, Rocky the Petaluma Free Range Chicken. Jimmy has been touted as one of Santa Cruz's best kept secrets by KPIG radio. www.jimmychickenpants.com

AT DON QUIXOTES MUSIC HALL

6275 Highway 9 in Downtown Felton, call 831-603-2294

A stellar lineup of the world’s best mandolin players are in town for the five day mandolin symposium at ucsc and they will be playing a very special concert tonight at Don Quixotes!

In 1979, at the age of 19, Mike Marshall invited to join the original David Grisman Quintet in the SF Bay Area. That association quickly lead to his recording and touring with some of the top names in acoustic music today including Tony Rice, Mark O’ Connor, Stephane Grappelli, Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer. In 1986, while still a member of Montreux, Mike founded a classical string quartet of mandolin family instruments -- two mandolins, mandola and mandocello. The Modern Mandolin Quartet released four recordings for Windham Hill Records. Meanwhile, Mike had traveled to Brazil and began a love affair with Brazilian ‘choro’ music, a delightful musical form that combines virtuosic instrumental playing with rhythmically complex improvisations, not unlike bluegrass or early swing music. www.mikemarshall.net

Danilo Brito is from Brazil. After winning the seventh annual Premio Visa de Musica Brasileira award in 2004 for the best instrumentalist (on any instrument) in all Brazil, 19 year old Danilo Brito went into one of the top studios in Sao Paulo and recorded Perambulando. www.danilobrito.com.br/index_en.html

Caterina Lichtenberg was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. She studied in Magdeburg and finished them with distinction in the fields of mandolin and guitar at the Cologne Academy of Music. She is the first-prize winner of many national and international music competitions and was a scholarship holder at the Richard Wagner Foundation. www.caterinalichtenberg.com/english/

Dudu Maia is from Brazil. A virtuoso of the bandolim (Portuguese for “mandolin”) One of Brazil’s top bandolim players, Dudu evokes Brazil’s greatest musical traditions: as well as influences from diverse styles such as progressive rock. www.dudumaia.com

Dick, Mick & The Chick
Blues/Folk/Jazz

Sunday, June 22nd, 7:00pm, $12 adv/$15 door
<21 w/parent

FC Cosponsored Show
AT DON QUIXOTES MUSIC HALL

6275 Highway 9 in Downtown Felton, call 831-603-2294

Legions of Santa Cruz audiences know and love Dick DuJour in the guise of Ukulele Dick. Fewer are aware of his skill as a guitarist and writer of music that is best described as "existential retro pop." DuJour's recently released CD Music to Scare Children By features songs like Be Kind to Your Brain and Good Old Body of Mine, which delight in the essential irony of the human condition and revel in our inexorable mortality. Dick DuJour is joined "in the round" by singer/songwriters Mick Overman (Bluesy Folk & Roll with Jazz Attitude) and Jayme Kelly Curtis (metaphysical blues and folkloric jazz.) The three have teamed up to present a one-of-a-kind show, backing each other on a wide variety of instruments, vocals and theatrics.

The Greencards
Friday, June 27th, 7:30pm, $15 adv/$17 door
<21 w/parent

FC Cosponsored Show
AT DON QUIXOTES MUSIC HALL

6275 Highway 9 in Downtown Felton, call 831-603-2294

The Greencards received a 2008 Grammy nomination in the Best Country Instrumental category for Mucky The Duck, a track from their current album, Viridian. The instrumental was penned by Kym Warner, mandolin player for the band and was named after one of the band's favorite venues in Houston Texas , The Mucky Duck. When speed doesn't kill, it can thrill, and the lightning-strike success of The Greencards has been decidedly of the latter variety. To be them is to be on a rocket ship disguised as a touring van, on a highway where there are no speed limits. Four short years ago, a green card was an immigration document. Now The Greencards are an acoustic music phenomenon that's played around the world, headlined major festivals, won awards, and toured with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson. www.thegreencards.com
