Eddie and Martha Adcock
Newgrass and Bluegrass, Hot Picking and Original Songs
Friday, May 9th, 8.00pm, $15/$17
AT MISSION CITY COFFEE ROASTING CO.

2221 The Alameda, Santa Clara, CA 95050
call 831-475-4938 or email Brundle@attglobal.net

Eddie Adcock is a bonefide living legend - THE Patriach of "new acoustic music" - a fusion of bluegrass, jazz and other styles, which eventually became "Newgrass". As the original banjo sparkplug, baritone vocalist, and key arranger of the groundbreaking Country Gentlemen of the 60's, he helped change bluegrass forever, taking it uptown and into Carnegie Hall. In addition to his bold and original banjo style he is also an innovative fingerstyle guitarist and during lean times doubled as a jazz guitarist under a pseudonym out here on the West Coast.

Eddie met Martha, a singer songwriter, in 1973. Married and performing together since 1976, they now concentrate entirely on duet shows, rather than full bands, featuring bluegrass, blues, country, folk, jazz, rockabilly and gospel influences. Martha takes much of the lead singing and backs up Eddie's lead instrumentals on rhythm guitar. Other interesting facts are that in his native Virginia the state has an official "Eddie Adcock" day (June 14th), and Martha is a certified welder.

Eddie is not in the best of health these days and cannot tour much now (though he recently managed sold out tour of Japan!), so take this opportunity to listen to one of the great gentlemen of acoustic music.

Chojo Jacques and Friends
(aka Houston Jones)
Saturday, May 10th, 8.00pm, $15/$17
AT MISSION CITY COFFEE ROASTING CO.

2221 The Alameda, Santa Clara, CA 95050
call 831-475-4938 or email Brundle@attglobal.net

Wayne "Chojo" Jacques has a musical diversity to match his personal background (part Hawaiian, born in Germany, firmly rooted in Texas, lived in Montana, now resident in the Santa Cruz Mountains). Originally an aspiring guitarist, he realized he was better suited to the fiddle, and like many fiddlers, eventually added mandolin. After becoming interested in electric mandolin, but looking for a deeper guitar sound, he also began using a Stratocaster type octave mandolin/mini guitar.

His smoky, swing/blues influenced playing works well with his interpretation of genres such as bluegrass, Americana, Celtic, roots rock, and others. He can, and will, play in any style that comes to mind, but with a distinct signature sound. Since he almost never plays a piece quite the same way twice, an immediacy and freshness are always evident in his playing, and audiences can count on a spontaneous energy at his shows.

His enjoyment of the musical unknown has led him into collaborations with countless songwriters and bands, and, of course he was one of the founders of the Waybacks. One of the regular collaborations is as the hired gun fiddle/mandolin player for the Houston Jones Band. Occasionally the tables get turned, and its Chojo Jacques and Friends, with the HJ band backing Chojo and letting him take full control. Then you never know quite what will happen ….so come and find out this time!

<21 w/parent

FC Cosponsored Show
AT DON QUIXOTES MUSIC HALL

Once you hear Jonathan Edwards' voice, you'll want to hear it again and again. His rich, warm tenor has a distinctively unique and natural quality. Jonathan has acquired an enviable track record, one of skill and grace in the sometimes brutal world of the music business. And he has done it while keeping intact his ear for a strong melody and love of a beautifully crafted song. During his 36-year career he has recorded 15 albums and penned such notable hits as "Shanty" and "Sunshine", which earned him a gold record in 1971. This classic song, covered by Paul Westerberg, is included in the 1995 release of "Friends", a compilation of music for the hit NBC-TV show, and is heard in the 1994 Will Ferrell film “Anchorman” and included on the soundtrack. His 1987 children's album, "Little Hands", selected by the National Library Association as a "Notable Children's Recording", has sold over 20,000 copies and is still going strong. www. jonathanedwards.ne

Montana Skies
Cello and Guitar Duets - Classical, Contemporary and World Music
Friday, May 16th, 8.00pm, $15/$17
AT MISSION CITY COFFEE ROASTING CO.

2221 The Alameda, Santa Clara, CA 95050
call 831-475-4938 or email Brundle@attglobal.net

Montana Skies are Jonathon and Jennifer Adams, from Georgia. Having discovered, a number of years ago, that the repertoire for cello and guitar duets was as limited as the combination of instruments is rare, they began composing their own music and arranging existing works (from classical to the Beatles; from Pink Floyd to Vivaldi). They now have 4 CDs. The first, Potpourri is a selection from Bach, Mozart, and the great masters of our times. The second, third and fourth, juxtapose very recognizable melodies with their own innovative compositions. Jonathon also has several solo CDs and a fingerstyle instruction book published by Mel Bay. They tour extensively and play both in large and in intimate settings. Jonathon plays classical and steel string guitars; Jenn plays classical and electric cello.

Montana Skies have played once before for Fiddling Cricket, three years ago. We look forward to their return, and particularly hearing Jenn's specially made electric cello.

"Hypnotic…imaginative…played with passion..." - Acoustic Guitar Magazine

Del Rey
Resonator Guitarist and Vocalist

Sunday, May 18th, 7.00pm, $10 adv/$12 door
<21 w/parent

FC Cosponsored Show
AT DON QUIXOTES MUSIC HALL

6275 Highway 9 in Downtown Felton, call 831-603-2294

Del Rey guitar playing combines country blues, stride piano, classic jazz and hillbilly boogie through the sensibility of a trailer-park esthete. Her live show is full of complex guitar grooves and sly humor. Del Rey is fun to watch, with her dancing feet, infectious smile and big, elegant, yet goofy outfits. In concert Del plays a metal resonator parlor guitar--wickedly. “Bored with the boys and their bottlenecks and bell brass blues guitars? Then check out Del Rey: she plays acoustic blues, ragtime, sings, tells good stories, plays a metal-bodied resonator guitar, dresses imaginatively, and is not a boy.” Folk Roots, UK www.hobemianrecords.com

Amy LaVere
Billy Holiday Meets Norah Jones Americanaville

Thursday, May 22nd, 7:30pm, $8 adv./$10 door
<21 w/parent

FC Cosponsored Show
AT DON QUIXOTES MUSIC HALL

6275 Highway 9 in Downtown Felton, call 831-603-2294

Amy tore it up at her first two Don Quixote’s Concerts and is back by popular demand Amy LaVere (singer, songwriter, motion picture actress): Imagine Billy Holliday meets Norah Jones in style and tone but with distinctive twists and a wide mixture of American roots flavors. Now imagine that she looks like the twenty something, stunning Wanda Jackson, who she portrayed in the movie “Walk The Line” and leads her own band playing the fire out of a doghouse bass that is bigger than her. No Depression Magazine writes: “Amy LaVere portrayed Wanda Jackson in the (Johnny Cash) film "Walk The Line”, but on her alluring debut disc, she comes across more like a demure roots chanteuse than a rockabilly wildcat. The Memphis-based performer establishes her album’s blue mood immediately on the opening “Day Like Any”. Supported by Jimbo Mathus’ sinewy guitar work, this torchy tune examines a relationship gone wrong, a topic she revisits throughout this ten-song outing. While the lyrics concentrate on romantic woes, the music holds an endearing retro Americana quality as LaVere gracefully mixes the sounds of the backwoods (the mountain-bluesy “Nightingale”) with smoky juke joints (the accordion-paced “Take ‘Em Or Leave ‘Em”)”. Amy LaVere was also cast in the supporting role of Jesse in award-winning director Craig Brewer's ("Hustle & Flow") Paramount Pictures production "Black Snake Moan" featuring Samuel L. Jackson, Christina Ricci and Justin Timberlake. http://www.archer-records.com/artists/amy_lavere/pressDyn.asp?aid=5 and http://www.myspace.com/amylavere

Paul Mehling, the founder and Django Reinhardt style lead guitarist of the Hot Club of San Francisco, brings his band back to the Fiddling Cricket stage once again. The group performs a mixture of material from the original Hot Club repertoire, plus bebop, Brazilian and originals by Paul. The current line up is Paul on lead guitar, Evan Price, violin, Jeff Magidson, rhythm guitar, and Clint Baker, bass.
